Tips for winter

According to Ancient Chinese Wisdom we human beings should live in harmony with the seasons. As we are approaching winter let us look at some practical and simple ways to honour ourselves and the natural cycles of the environment.

But first, let us learn some of the qualities of Winter to give us an understanding:

  • The season of Winter is cold, dark and wet. Winter is Yin in nature and is associated with the Water Element. It is a time when the rain nourishes the seeds in the ground which will bloom again in Spring. The organs of the Water element are Kidney and Urinary Bladder. In Chinese Medicine, Kidneys are considered the source of all energy or Qi in the body. The Bladder stores our fluids and maintains our energy reserves.
  • The emotions in the Water Element are around Fear and Anxiety. When the energy in the water element is out of balance we can experience an increase of fears and anxieties.
  • Spiritually the Water Element is associated with the willpower which guides and assists us with following our inner direction and true purpose.

Some things to do:

  • Fundamental principles of winter rest, reflection, conservation and storage
  • Water, drink lots of it. It will flush out anything unwanted like toxins and viruses. Add some fresh lemon or lime to your water
  • Eat warm hearty soups, whole grains, and roasted nuts. They help to warm the body's core
  • Get to sleep early, rest well, and rise late after the suns rays have warmed the atmosphere
  • Stay warm, and expend a minimum quantity of energy
  • Slow down
  • Remain introspective
